Use 5% for simple rectangular rooms with hardwood, laminate, or vinyl plank laid straight. Use 10% for standard tile laid straight, carpet, or rooms with multiple angles. Use 15% for tile laid diagonally, herringbone patterns, rooms with many cutouts (like bathrooms), or irregularly shaped rooms. When in doubt, round up — leftover material can be used for future repairs.
For rectangular rooms: measure the length and width at the widest points, including under door frames and into closets. For L-shaped or irregular rooms: break the room into rectangles, calculate each separately, then add together. Always measure in feet and round up to the nearest half-foot. Don't subtract for small obstacles like kitchen islands — the offcuts can be used elsewhere.
Tile is more durable (lasts 50+ years), water-resistant, and easier to clean, but cold underfoot and harder to repair if cracked. Material cost: $1–$15+/sq ft. Hardwood is warmer, adds home value, and can be refinished multiple times, but is sensitive to moisture. Material cost: $3–$12/sq ft. Laminate and vinyl plank offer great middle grounds: waterproof, affordable ($1–$5/sq ft), but cannot be refinished.
