Frequently Asked Questions

Pixelation has many practical and creative uses: privacy protection (censoring faces, license plates, or sensitive data in screenshots), pixel art creation for games and digital art, retro aesthetics for social media content, and artistic effects for profile pictures or thumbnails. TV news programs use real-time pixelation to anonymize witnesses.

Each block in the pixelation grid becomes a solid color. A small block size (2–8px) produces subtle softening while keeping shape recognizable — useful for light censoring. A large block size (20–80px) creates bold, abstract pixel-art blocks that completely obscure detail. For censoring faces, 15–30px is typically sufficient for privacy while still looking intentional.

Average Color samples all pixels in each block and fills the block with the mathematical average RGB color — producing smoother, more uniform blocks. Mosaic (Center) takes the color of only the center pixel of each block, which can produce more varied and saturated colors, resembling traditional glass mosaic tiles. Average mode is better for censorship; Mosaic mode is more visually interesting for art.
