Frequently Asked Questions

CODE128 is the most versatile — it supports all ASCII characters and automatically selects the most efficient encoding. EAN-13 is used on retail products worldwide. UPC-A is the North American retail standard (12 digits). CODE39 is older, widely supported, and good for alphanumeric codes in industrial settings.
EAN-13 is a fixed-length format where the last digit is a checksum calculated from the first 12. All 13 digits must be provided together. EAN-8 works similarly with 8 digits, and UPC-A uses 12 digits. These fixed lengths allow scanners to validate the barcode instantly.
The barcode image itself is free to use. However, for retail products you need a licensed barcode number from GS1. The barcode format (EAN, UPC) is open, but the specific numbers are assigned by GS1 to ensure global uniqueness.
