Kinetic energy (KE) is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion. The formula KE = ½mv² shows that KE depends on both mass and the square of velocity. Doubling the speed quadruples the KE — this is why highway speeds are much more dangerous than city speeds. KE is always positive (or zero) since v² is always positive.
Gravitational potential energy (PE) is the energy stored in an object due to its height above a reference point. PE = mgh, where m is mass, g is gravitational acceleration (9.81 m/s² on Earth), and h is height. When an object falls, PE converts to KE.
