Frequently Asked Questions

The 4.0 scale assigns numeric grade points to each letter grade. An A or A+ earns 4.0 points, while an F earns 0.0 points. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing everything, then dividing by total credits. A 4.0 is a perfect GPA (straight A's). Not all schools use plus/minus grades — some use a flat 4.0/3.0/2.0/1.0/0.0 system.

Plus/minus grading creates a finer-grained scale. An A- (3.7) instead of an A (4.0) on a 3-credit course reduces your GPA by (4.0-3.7)×3 = 0.9 grade points. Over many courses, small differences compound significantly. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course contribute very differently. Schools without plus/minus grading give all B students the same 3.0, regardless of whether they scored 80% or 89%.

Most universities set the Dean's List threshold at a 3.5 semester GPA, though this varies. Some schools require 3.6 or higher, and some set it at the top 10% of students regardless of fixed GPA cutoff. Magna Cum Laude typically requires a 3.7 cumulative GPA, Cum Laude around 3.5, and Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Always check your specific institution's requirements, as policies vary significantly.
