Weighted grades assign different levels of importance to different assignments. For example, if your homework is worth 30% and you scored 85%, that contributes 85 × 0.30 = 25.5 points to your final grade. The final grade is the sum of all (score/max × weight) across all categories. Weights must total 100% for the calculation to be accurate. A 100% on a 10% assignment matters less than a 70% on a 40% final exam.
Standard 4.0 GPA scale: A+/A = 4.0 (93-100%), A- = 3.7 (90-92%), B+ = 3.3 (87-89%), B = 3.0 (83-86%), B- = 2.7 (80-82%), C+ = 2.3 (77-79%), C = 2.0 (73-76%), C- = 1.7 (70-72%), D+ = 1.3 (67-69%), D = 1.0 (63-66%), D- = 0.7 (60-62%), F = 0.0 (below 60%). Some schools don't use plus/minus grades and round to the nearest whole letter.
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all those products, then dividing by total credit hours. Example: if you take a 3-credit A (4.0) course and a 4-credit B+ (3.3) course: (3×4.0 + 4×3.3) / (3+4) = (12 + 13.2) / 7 = 3.6 GPA.
